Seven Arrested in SAT Cheating Scandal in New York
A college student from New York was paid between $1,500 and $2,500 to stand in for at least a half dozen students attending a prestigious Long Island high school and take the SAT exam for them, a prosecutor said Tuesday in announcing criminal charges in the case.
Earlier this year, Great Neck North faculty members heard rumors that students had paid a third party to take the SAT for them, Rice said. Administrators then identified six students who "had large discrepancies between their academic performance records and their SAT scores," the prosecutor said.
The Great Neck School District released a statement saying it is cooperating with the investigation: "It is our hope that the actions currently being taken by the District Attorney's Office will serve to bring an end to any dishonest practices which may have placed students at an unfair disadvantage and will also bring to light any shortcomings in the security of the SAT testing system."

Android Named Number One Mobile Device for Malware
This week McAfee released its quarterly report on technology threats and pointed to a dramatic spike in attacks on Android. Interestingly, the report does not even list Apple's iOS due to the rare instances of malware found. (see chart)
McAfee also stated that attacks on the Android platform drove it to the number one position within three months and as more users adopt Android technology, more users will be effected by malware attacks.

NISOD Panel: Identity Proofing for Online Student ID Verification
With more courses being delivered online, educational institutions need to implement a low-cost, reliable student identity verification solution to manage growth and compliance issues
Isn't it time to raise the bar on student verification? Meeting and exceeding federal requirements is a costly process especially with more students taking courses and exams online. Add privacy concerns to systems being used today and we can see how current systems fall short on verifying the actual user.

Michaels Breach Bigger than Reported
Michael Stores initially reported that a scheme, in which point-of-sale pads customers use to key in their personal identification numbers, was isolated to Chicago, but on Tuesday the arts and crafts supplies retailer issued a statement that said nearly 90 stores in 20 states, stretching from Rhode Island to Washington, were affected.
The breach was first linked to a select group of Chicagoans who reported dings to bank accounts after their debit cards were allegedly copied during recent transactions at area Michaels craft stores. The Secret Service is investigating. Investigators believe legitimate PIN pads were traded or swapped out for PIN pads that skim and collect card details.
As a precautionary measure, Michaels has removed some 7,200 PIN pads from most of its 964 U.S. stores and expects replacements to be completed within the next 15 days. As a precautionary measure, PIN pads in Michaels Canadian locations are being screened as well.

One in 3,000 websites harbouring malware: Kaspersky
Increasing number of legitimate websites falling prey to cyber criminals
Kaspersky has said that the proportion of websites secretly harbouring malware climbed to one in 3,000 in 2010.
In its report, the security company has stated an increase in the number of Web-based attacks last year, when more than 580 million incidents were detected.
